Steve McCurry April 23 1950
Personal background:
Steve McCurry was born in america, the year 1950. After graduating high school Steve went on to attend Penn State University. At first he wanted to study filming but later received a degree in theatre arts. He started to take photographs for the Penn State Newspaper, and eventually fell in love with the art. The start of his career began when he snuck in to Afghanistan and took photos of the people and surroundings. Steve came home with many images but the one that he held the closest was the world famous “ Afghan Girl”
Style:
The first thing that stands out to me in his photos is the contrast. In many of his photos steve has amazing contrast. One thing I notice that happens to people a lot is that they try to make everything contrast. Steve always has just one or two contrasting things. In Steve’s photo “The Afghan Girl” the contrast is mainly between the girls eyes and her clothes, subtle but amazing. The other point that I noticed is that many of his photos capture a lot more than just the people, they manage to capture their environment too. This helps you to be able to connect and feel what the person is going through.
Philosophy:
Steve’s work has mainly focused on the toll that war takes on not only landscapes, but people and communities also. Steve focuses on the human face to show the emotion and stories of every person. His goal is to convey what it is like for a person caught in a tug a war of nature and nations. Steve shows what life is like, unfiltered. As Steve shows these images it helps everybody understand what is happening in the world.
Influences:
Steve has really affected my photography. First I really took the amount of contrast I have in my photos to heart. I noticed that as less contrast can really be more powerful. The second way I have been affected is that I now focus on capturing emotion in my photos because the photos he took really spoke to me. Hopefully my photos can become more like his because they really are just what I want mine to be.

Compare & Contrast:
My first photo is very alike. My mom was cooking dinner in our kitchen and my brother was reading, I moved him over by the stove on to a stool and the pictures came out very alike. The only difference is that my kitchen is a different color. I like my second photo was of my mom and brother. My brother and the kid really related because he did not want to take the picture and had a scorn on his face also. I tried to get him and my mom in the same position as the photograph. My last photo I really like but was not all that similar. My sister had an apron and was sweeping like in Steve’s but we did not have a shop in the background. I really like it though because my sister had the perfect pose.
Artist Statement: My photos are all of my family, this is because I like taking photographs of them and making them look good. I tried to mimic Steve’s photos and did pretty well. I wish I was able to make all of my photos just like his because his photos are so amazing. I did pretty well and am really proud of how these photos turned out. This shows lots of what I have learned this Trimester.
